Tundra chief engineer Mike Sawers told Driving.ca that he loves diesel engines and would like them to be included in the lineup. However, after the Volkswagen Group diesel portal scandal, it took three years to adopt diesel engines in North America. The Motor1 has struggled with that, and it’s been said that while it doesn’t look like a performance pickup, it does deliver plenty of torque and the faster and smoother input than the gasoline variant. It’s quiet, and provides an enjoyable driving experience, as you’d expect from a hybrid car. The only problem, and this is a minor one, which can be eliminated once you get used to the pickup truck, is that the braking system is very responsive because regenerative braking adds to the stopping power of the disc.
The hybrid’s extra power of 48 horsepower and 104 pound-feet of torque doesn’t make it perform much better, according to a Motor Trend review, which also points to flaws in the highly sensitive braking system. Technology enthusiasts may find it lacking in custom graphics that show energy flow or energy regeneration. A serious disappointment is the lack of EV mode, although Toyota would think it might not be of much use for most customers in everyday driving.
