Not exactly what we were expecting but still an interesting choice.

According to Drive, Lexus could fill the model gap left by the GS with a new sedan based on Toyota Mirai. Yes, that means that if the information is correct, we might get a hydrogen-powered luxury sedan from Lexus based on the technology in the Mirai. Nothing official, of course, but the report is based on a now-deleted Instagram post showing the brand’s leaked product plans.

Drive explains that the new product may have a different name and could be launched as an indirect replacement for the GS in Asia and North America. Mirai is currently manufactured on the same assembly line as the Toyota Crown, a luxury car for Japan. Meanwhile, the Crown typically shares many components with the GS while the latter is still for sale.

According to the leaked product plans, Lexus should unveil a successor to the GS sometime next year. If all this is true, we should start seeing spy photos and teasers in the months leading up to the end of the year.

The styling, while decidedly more modern than that of the upcoming third-generation GS luxury sports sedan, is particularly polarizing for the large spindle-style front grille – a look that continues on the fourth generation of the all-new GS sedan launched in late general form of production. Today, in 2020, this hub design is a well-known feature in the Lexus lineup, for better or worse, but how has the GS that started it all performed in the years since? To find out, we asked Lexus for a 2020 GS 350 F Sport for a week of driving in the rainy Pacific Northwest.

Freshly updated in 2015 with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, new exterior lighting, infotainment system and additional safety tech, there’s still a bit new for 2020. We may be insensitive, but the spindle grille does not look as ominous as it once was to our eyes, and the rest of the GS designs, while not obtrusive, are very elegant. However, we immediately felt comfortable behind the wheel of the GS 350 F Sport, with plenty of interior space in the front and rear seats. Although spacious, it doesn’t feel bulky when driving around town – great for a four-door sports car.

sports? Well kinda. The GS 350 F Sport is arguably its most dynamic configuration with optional rear-wheel drive. Instead, our test car was built with an AWD six-speed automatic, another clear sign of its age, especially for a car in this luxury segment.

While the six-speed automatic transmission doesn’t have any nasty quirks, it’s completely incapable of using limited power on tap. The 3.5-liter V-6 produces 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, enough to make slow traffic a fairly simple task even in this nearly 5,000-pound powerful car. Of course, even today’s Camry V-6 has 301 horsepower — and an eight-speed transmission. In other words, the GS 350 doesn’t wow anyone when you hit the throttle, but it stays at the end of the fun spectrum. Those looking for a more performance-oriented car will likely opt for the GS F, a special 467-hp engine that shreds the time from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Flatfoot GS 350 F Sport is off and it would take about six seconds to do the same. The GS’ all-wheel drive system makes driving in mostly wet conditions a point-and-shoot matter, with excellent stability and little spin even on aggressive takeoffs.

Rumors of the GS sedan being discontinued have been circulating for about a year with no alternative mentioned and the entry-level GS 300 canceled for 2020. This means that if you want a GS, it has to be either the GS 350 or the GS F, the latter of which is significantly more expensive, with prices starting at Mid $80,000 range. For that kind of money, buyers can look forward to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which has a sharper jigger movement and a twin-turbocharged 505-horsepower V-6. If we had to get the GS before the pattern probably disappeared, you can bet we’d be looking for the best price – dealers would definitely deal.
