In normal driving situations, the bike’s level of refinement is excellent and won’t leave you wanting more. The off-road system, four-wheel drive, and various terrain settings work like magic. That said, the SUV’s dash from 0 to 60 mph and the quarter-mile sprint take longer compared to its competitors, but it makes up for it with its excellent off-road capabilities.
The Audi Q7 has the smallest engine of the bunch, but it still manages to overtake the Discovery in a 0-60 mph sprint. Featuring the lowest 0-60 mph and quarter mile time, as well as the highest rates of power and torque from the larger turbocharged I-6 engine, it makes the BMW X5 the fastest of the bunch. While the Mercedes-Benz GLE has the same power and torque figures as the Q7, its acceleration time is nearly identical to that of the Discovery, which is disappointing.

JLR says the Land Rover brand will receive six variants of pure electric over the next five years and offer electric versions of each model by the end of the decade.
The Next Range Rover Uses JLR’s New MLA Platform
Land Rover’s large SUVs – the Land Rover Discovery, the Range Rover and its little brother, the Range Rover Sport – will use a new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform that can be configured to run with a petrol engine or as an electric vehicle. The first is the new Range Rover to be released next year.
But the two smaller models – the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque – are switching to a new electric modular architecture (EMA) which is expected to account for half of LR sales by 2030.
We don’t expect to see a drastic change of style between the current car and the new one arriving in 2024, a year after the new Evoque. Discovery’s larger, yet controversial, asymmetric rear design hasn’t been a hit yet, so it’s likely the sport will adopt some cues from the Evoque. Flat door handles, slim LED headlights and a cleaner front appearance, including a flat grille panel, will be the hallmarks of the new design.
Inside, there’ll be more room thanks to the flat floor of the EMA platform, a larger touchscreen, digital instruments and a stylish new steering wheel seen in the Defender.
The EMA platform is designed to drive wheels exclusively via electric motors: either, providing two-wheel drive in entry-level and city-based cars, or two, providing all-wheel drive. But here’s where it gets interesting, as Autocar suggests that while some Evoque and Disco Sports will be pure BEVs, drawing current from a large underground battery pack, others will get smaller batteries and an extended range petrol engine.
The small “light-combustion” engine would not direct the wheels, and would only be used to recharge small batteries. This is a trick BMW used on its hybrid version of its i3 city car, and Mazda will be using an extended-range version of its upcoming MX-30.
Say Hello To Hydrogen
By switching from a traditional ICE layout to a range extender, JLR will be able to significantly reduce the number of ICEs that must be built. Autocar reports JLR told investors it could rationalize “multiple internal combustion engines into one simplified electric motor, eliminating the cost of diesel and aftertreatment systems.”
But looking ahead, JLR has confirmed that it is developing zero-emission fuel cell technology “in preparation for future demand,” suggesting that hydrogen could fully replace ICE’s range extenders when customers and infrastructure are ready. This is a bit far. In the UK, for example, there are currently only 11 hydrogen stations across the country, compared to more than 8,000 conventional gas stations. It is interesting to note that other major automakers are now backing away from hydrogen altogether.
Discovery Sport and later Evoque will use 800V fast charging technology, as shown in cars like the Porsche Taycan and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Current cars that use 800V technology can add 60 miles in less than 5 minutes, which still has a lot of appeal for drivers hesitating to Transition from the convenience of gasoline power.
However, there is a possibility that the Evoque and Discovery Sport will outperform other 800v cars. Autocar reports that JLR claims an efficiency rating of 4-4.5 MPH for the EMA platform car. Most electric cars that provide this kind of efficiency are much smaller cars.

In addition to its electric powertrain, one of the main features of the EMA platform is the introduction of a new electric architecture. If that sounds boring, the capabilities are none other than the new electrical system that allows the Evoque and Discovery Sport to offer over-the-air updates, in-vehicle drivetrain and autonomous driving capabilities up to Level 4.
Recognizing that many of its cars never venture farther off the highway than standing on two wheels on the sidewalk, Land Rover began offering front-wheel drive versions of its vehicles a decade ago. But for the brand’s credibility, the next Disco Sport should still at least be able to offer serious off-road performance options. And thanks to the electric motor’s ability to precisely split torque to the wheels more precisely than the powertrain and ICE transmission, the next sports car should be even more capable in extreme conditions.
How Much Does It Cost?
The Discovery Sport currently starts at $37,800 in the US and £32,430 in the UK. But with JLR’s renewed focus on profit over size, and EMA’s high-tech content, don’t be surprised to see those prices grow exponentially as the Evoque and Discovery Sport move to the top.

The interior will also get some improvements and Land Rover says the new Discovery will be greener than ever. This clearly indicates a type of electric, possibly a hybrid.
Land Rover Discovery Spy Shot 2022
The all-new 2022 Land Rover Discovery will get a facelift mid-cycle. After the latest spy photos, some things have become familiar. The spy prototype wears light camouflage so that most updates are visible at first glance. The front will see the greatest improvement. For starters, a new pair of LED headlights is available.
Thanks to that, this SUV now looks more distinctive and has more character. As for the sides, the design is very attractive and the prototype wears the same black alloy wheels as the previous model. The rear will undergo minor updates, the taillights slightly reshaped and the bolder bumper a barely noticeable update.
Inside, the new 2022 Land Rover Discovery will remain. The interior design is exactly the same and even the cabin layout will remain the same. The Discovery SUV offers two- and three-row arrangements, with third-row seats reserved for higher-end models such as Landmark and HSE Luxury. All trim levels offer a five-seat configuration. The Discovery model offers about 10.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which isn’t a lot.
However, folding the chair will save up to 83.7 cubic feet of space. The base Discovery SE comes with standard dual-zone climate control, 12-way power front seats, a sunroof and leather seats. In addition, a 10-inch touch screen for infotainment is displayed once again. For 2022, Discovery will offer updated infotainment and many new driver assistance features.
Hybrid Power Is Coming
The regular 2022 Land Rover Discovery will continue to offer a 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine with 340 horsepower. Optionally, you can get a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that delivers 254 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. If you want better fuel efficiency and better towing capacity, diesel is definitely the best choice. As before, Land Rover offers an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The earlier Discovery model offered a towing capacity of 8,200 pounds. On the other hand, Land Rover promises a more environmentally friendly power generation option. This clearly indicates a type of electric, possibly a hybrid model. Recent reports mention a plug-in hybrid variant with a 48V setup but that’s not official yet.
Land Rover Discovery 2022 Price And Release Date
From what we know, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery will see a slight price hike. The new model will now cost $52,500 and the best-in-class HSE Luxury model will cost nearly $70,000.
