When it comes to vehicle design, Mazda does it one blow after another; The three new hatchbacks were awarded top honors with the 2020 World Car Design Awards. The all-new 6 will continue this momentum with close ties to the 2017 Vision Coupe concept concept.
As with the Vision show car, we envision the new 6 to be a stylish four-door featuring aggressive rear-wheel drive proportions that include a long hood, axle-to-panel ratio and short rear deck. In the transition from concept to production, the Model 6 will get a higher roofline and a larger day-out (DLO).
While the pronounced front bumper has been reduced, it will retain Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy with softer lines and a greater focus on handcrafted, organic surfaces – unlike the digital-centric styling seen on many other new cars today. The rear retains a Ferrari-inspired look with a sloping roofline, quad exhaust and circular LED taillights.
The interior of the car at the moment holds up very well, not only against its direct competitors, but also against some of the more expensive luxury brands. We expect the new 6 to build on its strengths with an expressive and well-designed five-seater cabin featuring the latest technology and comfort.
Unlike other recent Mazdas, a touchscreen interface will be integrated into the dashboard, with a Ferrari-like secondary display showing vehicle information in front of the front passenger. Along with the ample space in Nappa leather and exposed molded wood, expect other goodies like the adjustable head-up display, ambient lighting and a digital instrument cluster like the Porsche Taycan.
Mazda’s i-Activsense driver assistance kit will be standard; Including lane departure assist, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, 360-degree camera, pedestrian detection, intelligent speed sign recognition and G transmission control.
The big news here is undoubtedly the switch to an elongated engine layout with six-cylinder and rear-wheel drive options. The inline six-cylinder engines under development are Skyactiv-X compression ignition gasoline and SKYACTIV-D diesel with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology and plug-in hybrid technology.
While the power of this unit has not been confirmed, it is claimed to have an output of around 350 horsepower (261 kW). To reduce development costs, Mazda is rumored to have teamed up with Toyota, and the inline six is expected to end up in the upcoming Lexus IS and other Toyota products.
Some regions will likely use the updated Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter inline-4 turbocharged NA-formatted engine, and the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter twin-turbo inline-turbo diesel. Power will be sent to the rear wheels (or all four in some markets) via a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
Competition And Discovery
Traditionally, the Mazda6 has competed with more mainstream offerings such as Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Ford Fusion/Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat. Moving the Mazda6 to the luxury zone could be a risky move; But with its striking design and powerful new engine, it may only attract buyers of the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
