2023 BMW X5. The latest generation BMW X5 launched as the 2019 model in late 2018. The X5, internally known as the G05, is still one of the brand’s best-selling models and a profit generator. BMW expects to sell over 200,000 cars worldwide by 2021, together with the mechanically identical X6.

But the crossover is now three years old, and will soon be ready for a facelift or a Life Cycle Impulse in BMW. According to the folks at the BMW blog, next year will be during the car’s fourth year of production. Not only that, but a new and updated engine will also power the popular crossover.

According to the blog, BMW is working on a new engine codenamed S68. The report states that the S68 replaces the older N63 engine that has been around since 2008. The S68 will be a twin-turbo V8 with a “hot-vee” configuration like its predecessor. There’s a good chance the engine will have some form of mild hybrid assist, and rated horsepower is 535 hp (399 kW).

For reference, the current iteration of the N63 engine produces 523 hp (390 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. If the rumors are true, the S68 accounts for 12 hp (9 kW) of power over the N63. The BMW blog adds that the new engine means the M50i badge will be replaced by the M60i.

There are also power improvements across the range other than the “junior M” model. The B58’s turbocharged inline-six gets its second technical update and could produce around 370 horsepower (276 kW) on the 2023 X5 xDrive40i. The X5 xDrive45e can also get a power boost from 389 hp (290 kW) to 480 hp (358 kW). Even the B57 turbodiesel inline-six will receive a third technical update.

BMW is unlikely to rock the boat in order to improve its 2023 BMW X5 exterior. This conclusion comes from a recent spy photo showing an evolutionary redesign. The headlights on the new 2023 BMW X5 look longer and thinner than the outgoing model, while the grille is a bit wider. The bumper may take inspiration from the LCI Series 5 that was first introduced about a year ago. As for the interior, the 2023 X5 could get a digital overhaul as most competitors adopt a floating widescreen design.

2023 BMW X5 Update

The upcoming 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e will arrive with plenty of refreshment. The new model outperforms the previous version in every category. It’s part of the current X5 generation, so BMW will give it a mid-cycle refresh. However, the plug-in hybrid version will improve in every aspect.

The new 2021 BMW X5 xDriver45e PHEV comes with a single electric motor and powerful battery. Thanks to the latest updates, the upcoming model will produce 389 horsepower. Furthermore, this model will produce 443 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission are standard. By comparison, the regular X5 SUV is a rear-wheel drive model. The gasoline engine is fine with 282 horsepower, but the electric motor adds 111 horsepower.

The all-electric range is rated at 30 miles, and the electric top speed is set at 84 mph. That said, it hits an overall output of 130 mph, and it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. This means that the 2021 model will outperform previous SUVs in every aspect. Finally, BMW offers three driving modes – Hybrid, Electric and Sport.

The all-new 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e SUV will be a bit more expensive this time around. The new price starts at $65,500, and sales will start in July in the US. However, the coronavirus outbreak may force BMW to reschedule its launch.

The improved BMW X5 M is nearing production as a slightly disguised prototype was spied on during testing at the Nürburgring. Expected to be revealed later this year or early next year, the high-performance crossover will get modest changes focused mostly on the front end.

While the camouflage does a good job of concealing the update, it looks like the model will come with a revised grille and new headlights. They should be joined by an updated front bumper, but things look very evolutionary at this point.

It’s a different story in hindsight as the back appears to be untouched. However, the taillights may have revised the graphics for a 3D look.

The spy photographer hasn’t looked inside much, but previous images suggest the crossover will adopt a simpler transmission, an updated key fob, and a curved screen similar to that of the iX. As a result, we can expect an independent 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 14.9-inch infotainment system.

The changes can also be found under the hood as recent rumors suggest that the 2023 X5 M will be offered exclusively in competition variant and equipped with the new S68 engine set to debut at XM. While the latter model will be offered exclusively as a plug-in hybrid, the improved X5 M is said to be a mild hybrid. That means the X5 M likely won’t be as powerful as the XM concept, which has 740 hp (552 kW / 750 hp) and 738 pound-feet (999 Nm) of torque.
