Even in the early stages of development, we can already see that the redesigned X1 will take on a bolder, more solid look than the current model thanks to the wide shark nose grill. The rest of the designs appear to be evolutions from the current model, although the Hofmeister’s signature grille appears more vertical, highlighting the sturdiness of the design. Like the prototype, this one features an adequately sized grille and sharper, upward-facing headlights. At the back, we can see a smaller backlight, although the exact shape is yet to be decided, so what you have here is more than expected.

What we don’t see displayed is the train-like rear design prototype, with the backlighting more or less aligned with the door handles, not the door mirrors. Things will, of course, become clearer over time as BMW will provide additional test cars. As far as the interior is concerned, we expect it to mirror the styling of the upcoming 2 Series Active Tourer, meaning it features a driver-oriented, dual-screen design, featuring a redesigned instrument panel and center console.

We noticed that a more square grille with two kidneys connected in the middle will be installed for 2023. The two clusters of lamps also appear a bit narrower. We feel the X1 is more of a “consumer good” than a BMW that you really want to own and play with.

One area where we know BMW is doing the right thing is the interior. We’ve seen pictures of the new scheme coming out in a few months, and they’re basically a dual screen like Mercedes-Benz. The work environment has also greatly improved.

The motors they would offer should be similar to those available now, but upgraded for efficiency. BMW is gradually adding mild hybrid technology to all of its powertrains, just like any other European automaker. This helps with fuel economy by recovering lost power, but there will also be plug-ins and even an EV version of the X1.

The FAAR platform is an update to the existing UKL platform that supports the current X1. The electric X1 is likely the iX1 badge in the works. It is one of at least 13 battery-electric models that the BMW Group will introduce across the brand by the end of 2023.

It will be a great alternative to the new GLA35 and GLB35 from Mercedes-AMG.

The improved BMW X1 was introduced last year, so expect BMW to wait until the launch of the new model before introducing the electric iX1. A release date of 2023 appears likely, accompanied by a price tag of around $64,509.
