2022 Cupra Formentor. Following the recent introduction of the Tevascan EV at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, the Spanish manufacturer has recently introduced the new 2022 Cupra Formentor SUV, which is based on the VW group’s MQB platform, which is also used on the newer Tiguan model.
However, compared to the Tiguan, the new Formentor looks much sportier and more coupe-like. This model is available with two engines, one of which is a plug-in hybrid. In addition, the interior is technical and comes with several exclusive materials.
2022 Cupra Formentor Design
The exterior design of the new Cupra Formentor 2022 is sporty and elegant. This high-performance SUV is based on the Formentor concept car launched a year ago. The design is excellent and we noticed that the graphics on the LED taillights looked much more elegant than concept. The grille has also been modified and the front end looks amazing.
As mentioned earlier, Formentor’s upcoming SUV is installed on the popular VW Group MQB platform used in many SUVs today. The newest Tiguan is on the same platform. However, compared to it, the new Formentor is a lot like a coupe and offers a more aggressive design. Dimensions, this compact two-row compact car measures a wheelbase of 105.1 inches (2,680 mm).
2022 Cupra Formentor Interior Design
Inside, Cupra Formentor 2022 will set itself apart from the rest of its family. This model offers a very technical interior, followed by many exclusive materials. It comes with two rows of seats and can accommodate five passengers. The single sport seats up front provide great comfort, and we love the new flat-footed steering wheel as standard. As mentioned, there are many new technologies inside. The new model introduces two 12.0-inch displays and serves as a hardware suite. The Formentor also provides 15.9 cubic feet (450 liters) of cargo space behind the rear seat.
Like many SUVs today, the following Formentor will come with a variety of electronic driver assistance features. As standard, this model offers Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Sign Recognition, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitor and more.
2022 Cupra Formentor Engine
The all-new 2022 Cupra Formentor is the SUV based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. Under the hood, this model is available with two engine options. Naturally, both are high-performance units.
The first powertrain for this SUV is also under the Golf R. In addition, the powerful base model consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 305 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. . This configuration comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4-wheel drive system as standard.
2022 Cupra Formentor Plug-in hybrid
The optional drive is a plug-in hybrid drive. According to the latest news, the additional hybrid powertrain has been borrowed from the redesigned version of the Golf GTE. The plug-in hybrid variant uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged inboard engine that generates 148 hp (110 kW) and is connected to a single electric motor of 114 hp (85 kW). Thanks to the combination, this configuration produces 242 bhp and 295 lb.
Like the base model, the plug-in hybrid will use the same DCT and 7-speed AWD. It also features a 13 kWh battery that sits under the rear passenger floor and delivers 31 miles of emissions-free driving.

2022 Cupra Formentor Update
The Cupra Formentor is the first properly featured brand new performance model. Sure, you’ve seen the Cupra name at the end of the most popular Seat models in the past, but now you’re going to start seeing it at first, in models that aren’t just Seats with a bun. This starts with the Formentor; A family SUV, it does a similar job to the VW T-Roc R and BMW X2 M35i.
Even if the Cupra badge looks like a tribal tattoo you wake up to with a hangover in Magaluf, the rest of the exterior resembles a Berocca image. Its sloping roof and pronounced folds give it a more sporty feel than the brand’s other SUV, the Cupra Ateca, despite having the same number of doors and seats.
Inside, the good news continues, because the Formentor is more interesting to see than the Ateca, but also the T-Roc R or X2 M35i. It has a tall center console, interestingly designed dashboard and doors, as well as a wide-screen infotainment system in the center. Quality is also very good. However, we wish there were a few customization options on the inside, and that also applied to the exterior with the wheel options.
There are also some annoyances in the infotainment system and buttons. For example, the screen is bright, sharp and responsive, but the system menus can be confusing at times. The touch-sensitive climate controls are also hard to use while driving, a criticism we’ve also leveled at the VW Golf, which has a similar package.
However, you can connect your Apple or Android phone and it will show on each model’s screen, which means you don’t need to worry too much about the built-in system or satellite navigation. We’ll be using 310 hp petrol, because the driving is so much fun. The V2 setting makes more sense from a value perspective.
You sit much closer to the ground in the Cupra Formentor than the Cupra Attica, which makes you feel closer to Lyon in terms of the riding position. The driving position itself is great, but if you want to go louder, the Ateca is a better choice. Other than that, there’s room for four adults inside Formentor, and its box doesn’t lag behind Ateca in terms of size or practicality. Nor is it the X2 for that matter.
You can get your Formentor with a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 150, 190 or 310 hp turbo, or go the plug-in hybrid track and have a 1.4-liter petrol engine with a small battery and electric motor that together deliver 204 or 245 hp. These PHEVs will travel about 37 miles on electricity, which means lower CO2 and cheaper company cars tax.
So far we have tested the 2.0-liter petrol engine with 310 hp. It has 4-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, a combination that ensures extremely strong acceleration in all conditions as well as plenty of grip in winter conditions. Cupra has also done a great job with the Formentor steering, and it’s super light, yet inspires confidence on a country road. Altogether, it’s as fun as T-Roc and more than the X2.
All Formentors come with a suspension system that you can tighten and loosen via the ride position selector. This keeps your body in better control through quick and tight corners, but in the most comfortable position, that means bulges in the city aren’t a problem either. And despite the Formentor’s pinched rear design, parking isn’t difficult as all cars have a rear camera.
The Formentor is a comfortable and quiet companion on the highway, which makes it so versatile. There are sporty SUVs with bigger shoes and higher stances to ride, but if none of these matters to you, Formentor definitely should be on your list of favorites.
