The Bolt EV will be refreshed this year in GM’s first EV attack, and it will get a 2022 crossover shape from the Chevrolet Bolt EUV.
The Bolt EV is back in 2022 and shows us all that it can’t write off. The smooth SUV will have a renewed look and will also make its sister variant appear as an electric crossover called the “EUV” Bolt.
While we wouldn’t expect the term “EUV” (short for “electric utility vehicle”) to spread, the taller Bolt EUV should appeal to customers looking for an electric SUV rather than an elongated hatchback. Not only does the sleek and gendered styling blend in with Chevrolet’s latest design language, but also another trend of the EV Bolt’s weakness.
The name “EUV” or otherwise known as “Electric Utility Vehicle” appears to be similar to a relatively new term for Chevy to play with, and is innovative in some ways, but may take some time to gain noticeable momentum.
Since the EUV is taller than the Companion EV, it may appeal to some buyers looking for an EV with a regular SUV design more than any of its long hatchbacks. A style that is somewhat in keeping with the design firm’s signature style will also look bright and sexy, and potentially fix Bolt’s current flaw as well.
2022 Chevy Bolt Interior
Based on Bolt BEV2 engineering, the EUV Bolt extends 3 inches between the wheels to provide a wider interior space and 5 to 6 inches overall. The Bolt is really high, and we don’t expect the EUV Bolt to be higher, but the more upright design will make it look more like an SUV with lower ground clearance compared to the size of an EMOJI.
The long wheelbase would provide room for a larger battery than the standard 66 kW-HR Pak Bolt, which would logically expand the range beyond a smaller 259-mile car. However, this will remain front-wheel drive only, as there are no plans to add the engine to the rear axle.
Since the EV Bolt and EUV Bolt will still be on the BEV2 platform, they will continue to use the same battery and charging technology as the new Ultium GM battery. This means that they will still be able to charge direct current quickly, but they will not be able to fill at the speed that the Ultium batteries are more advanced and will not have the same capacity and range.
On the one hand, use of current technology will allow the EUV Bolt to enter the market next year, while BEV3 and Ultium vehicles based on their batteries will not be ready for another year.
