2022 Audi SQ7 Update
Audi SQ7 2020 is the renewed and high-end version of the second generation midsize SUV. The SQ7 was introduced alongside its regular sibling, and it features a revised front end and a new interior borrowed from the Q8. Most importantly, it is the first version of the SQ7 to feature a petrol engine. The SQ7 was released in 2016, and it was a diesel-only model until now. The 2020 SQ7 petrol engine features a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces 500hp, making it the most powerful Q7 yet. It is also the fastest at 62 mph. Of course, the overall design of the front fascia has not changed, but Audi has abandoned the rectangular headlights, which were a bit dull, in favor of new lamps that are sharper towards the grille and wider towards the fenders. It’s also powered by a 4.0-liter V-8, but this gasoline engine produces 500 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. That’s 71 additional horsepower, but the petrol engine lags the TDI by 96 pounds of twisting.
While you might be tempted to think that both gasoline and diesel models are more or less equal because one has more power while the others benefit from more torque, the original classifications markedly advantage them. While the SQ7 TDI reaches 62 mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds, the gas-fired SQ7 reaches the same benchmark in 4.3 seconds. This is half a second faster. These numbers make the SQ7 the fastest Q7 available, taking the title from the SQ7 diesel engine.
The new SQ7 is also significantly faster than the other gasoline-powered Q7 models. It’s 1.4 seconds faster than the 60 TFSI e, powered by a hybrid system with a 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 450 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It’s also 1.8 seconds faster than the 3.0 TFSI version, now powered by a 3.0-liter V-6, good for 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.
Thanks to this new petrol model, Audi finally has a competitor to the BMW X5 M50i. The latter also has a V-8 engine, but it is a 4.4-liter unit that generates 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The Bimmer comes with an additional 23 horsepower and lags 15 pounds in the torque department, but the SUV has similar acceleration performance. Specifically, the X5 also reaches 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds.
Turning to Mercedes offerings in the GLE lineup, the SQ7 doesn’t clash with the AMG GLE 53 as you might think. The GLE 580 is a more favorable competitor in terms of power because its 4.0-liter V-8 turbocharged engine (along with the EQ Boost system) delivers 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. But that’s 17 hp and 52 lb-ft under the SQ7, so it’s not surprising that Merc is 0.6 seconds slower at 62 mph.
On the other hand, Porsche does not have a specific Cayenne model that conflicts with the SQ7. The Cayenne S is noticeably less powerful and slower, while the Cayenne Turbo is much more powerful and about half a second faster.
Like the rest of the Q7 range, the SQ7 comes equipped with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission and Quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Both are optimized for the new engine and to handle the extra power from the powertrain.
The SQ7 also features an S-shaped adaptive air suspension that electronically controls the dampers to regulate the dynamics when needed and also to improve ride quality. It also features rear-wheel steering, a system that reduces the turning radius of the SUV at low speeds and improves grip at speeds on the highways. The sport differential improves cornering agility by effectively dividing torque between each of the rear wheels, while being able to direct nearly all available torque to a single wheel.
