Infiniti has high hopes for the upcoming QX55 coupe crossover, but the car manufacturer was forced to delay the start of production by five months.
Initially, the Infiniti QX55 was scheduled to go into production in June 2020 at the Aguascalientes plant in Mexico, jointly owned by Nissan and Daimler. However, in a letter dated January 13th, Nissan informed the suppliers that the start of production has been postponed to November 2020.
The carmaker did not elaborate on the document, but said it was necessary to “guarantee production capacity” at the plant. Autonews contacted Infiniti for more details and got a somewhat elusive response from an American spokesperson for the luxury brand.

As a fan of the curvy proportions of the Infiniti FX crossover, which was later renamed the QX70, I was a little sad to see it leave the carmaker group quietly in 2017. The new model will be called the QX55 when it arrives in showrooms in the summer of 2020. The designation of the QX55 gives some clues about the nature of this new vehicle. I don’t think this is a real renaissance of midsize forex, as INFINITI would have resurrected the QX70 board for that. Instead, I’d expect a smaller, VC-Turbo-engine variant than the QX50 compact crossover, but with a coupe-like roofline and possibly sporting proportions. It makes sense: Infiniti is already reformulating the QX50 as the successor to FX on its website. Giving the new QX55 this distinct FX silhouette makes it even more realistic.
Each Infiniti model number ends in multiples of 10. Half a numerical step, I’d expect the QX55 to be the coupe-like variant of the QX50 shown here. If you’re right, that means another competitor in the niche segment of compact coupes that currently includes the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. Given the warm reception the QX50 received upon its arrival last year, I think a QX55 that sticks to this formula could have a multi-store appeal. Of course, I also hope that the Infiniti has some kind of technical modifications to the cabin or upgrades to the new roof.
