2021 Chevrolet Suburban Z71. GM removed the covers from the new Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban just a few weeks ago. In this case, the large SUV is brand new and not only due to the new exterior shell. An independent rear suspension supports all three rows of passenger cars for the first time, and a GM report says the Z71 model will also be part of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 portfolio.
This is not new, but it is. On the debut of the Tahoe / Suburban, Chevrolet introduced the Z71 Edition from the Tahoe, but not as a package. The Z71 is now a neat model, and the GM Authority says it’s also a trim level for the larger Suburban. The world is said to be coming from Chevrolet Truck Marketing Director Bob Cripps, and given the popularity of the Z71 package over decades, we have no reason to doubt the news, even though Chevrolet is somewhat relaxed about it.
What does this mean for the new Suburban? The Z71 is still Chevrolet’s off-road moniker, so expect all the improved details usually associated with the Z71. Official information for the Z71 Suburban is not yet available, but judging by what we know at Tahoe, Air-Ride height-adjustable springs will be part of the standard equipment.
Underneath skid plates will protect vital components, and like the Tahoe, the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 should have a unique front end that provides better clearance for approach angles. Off-road tire grip and monochrome exterior handling are also expected. Meanwhile, we’re in a buggy style for the sleek Chevy siblings, the GMC Yukon and the Cadillac Escalade. The Escalade is already scheduled to be unveiled on February 4, but we don’t know if the Yukon will appear before or after Cadillac’s flagship.
Engine of 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Z71
The biggest disappointment comes in the engine room, with only the 5.3L and 6.2L V-8 engines available. That’s right, the only version where the new 3.0-liter Duramax diesel is not available is the Z71. While the gases undoubtedly pack a lot of power, we like to see the Z71’s enormous torque range and fuel focus off-road.
We’re excited to see the Z71 finally get its own end, and to see Chevrolet spend the resources to please the off-road crowd. However, we want them to ditch 20-inch wheels in favor of tire sidewalls of 18 and up, and we really hope the red tow bar craze is over soon.
Chevy didn’t mention a rear differential either, but if we are to speculate, we’d recommend it equipped with the GovLock G80 differential, which we advise against. An electronically identifiable rear locker (and we dare say the front) would be the best. We’ll have to make our final judgment when we get a chance to drive in the wild, but for now, we’re cautiously optimistic about the off-road capabilities of the new Chevy family’s vehicles.
